On the 5th October 2010 the Provincial Grand Master announced the appointment of W. Bro. D. Staurt Cummins P.A.G.D.C.as Assistant Provincial Grand Master, to be Installed at a Ceremony in the Lodge of Charity in January 2011. W. Bro. Cummins takes over from W. Bro. Stewart G. Carley who has served the Province of Yorkshire West Riding for over five years and retires as A.P.G.M. on 31st December 2010.

W. Bro. Cummins is a “third generation” freemason and a “lewis”, his father and grandfather both were Past Masters of the Lodge of Charity. His grandfather Ernest Cummins, a Founder Member was Master in 1925 and father Donald Cummins in 1970.

Donald Stuart CUMMINS was Initiated 11th January 1985, Passed three month later on 12th April and Raised 12th July 1985. He was Worshipful Master 1994-95.

Stuart’s first appointment to Provincial Grand Lodge was to Past Provincial Assistant Grand Chaplin. He was then promoted to Past Provincial Grand Registrar. In 2006 he was appointed Provincial Grand Superintendent of Works, which he assured us was because he had a large car and trailer! However, were not quite convinced of that any more! The year 2007 brought promotion to Provincial Senior Grand Warden.

During 2009 he became Lodge Treasurer and was also promoted to Past Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies.

He is active in the Holy Royal Arch, a member of St. Laurence Chapter No.  2330 and an Honorary Member of Lifghtcliffe Chapter No. 3332 where he plays the organ.

50 year Certificate

At our regular meeting in January 2011 we plan to celebrate an important milestone in our Senior Past Masters’ long Masonic career. Fifty years as a Freemason. During the meeting he will be presented with a 50 year certificate to commorate the occasion.

W. Bro. Ronald Thurston P.P.J.G.W. was initiated into the Lodge on 13thJanuary 1961, he was passed one month later on 10th February and raised to a Master Mason on 12th May 1961. As was normal in the 60′s and 70′s because of the high number members in a Lodge it could take on average 10-15 years to reach the Masters Chair. W. Bro. Thurston became Master in 1974-75, some 13 years after his Initiation into Freemasonry and the Lodge of Charity.

During WWII W. Bro. Ron a navigator on Halifax bombers was shot down in 1943 on a raid over Berlin, he spent the remainder of World War II as a prisoner of war incarcerated in Stalag IVB, near Mulberg. He was eventually liberated by the Americans but had some hair raising experiences after being initially liberated by the Russians who told him and all the POW’s of the camp to make there own way to Reisa, approximately 25 miles to the south, where transport would take him to the American lines. He became caught up in the closing stages of the war where the Russians were fighting remaining pockets of German resistance on the east bank of the River Elbe and the Americans were doing the same on the West Bank.
